Celebrating birthdays is a thriving tradition when children are involved. We were recently introduced to a variation of that custom featuring the use of candles, a visually symbolic observance of milestones in the journey through childhood. Large candles marked with numbers on the front are lit on the birthday of the child and allowed to burn down to the number corresponding to the current year in the child’s life.

The candles used for this purpose are quite lovely and very popular. Predictably, numbered birthday candles mainly come in pink and blue. Traditional colors are perfect when the gender of the child is known, but since these candles are often purchased as gifts for baby showers, some are white or yellow in case the gift giver does not know the sex of the unborn child.

We were so taken with numbered birthday candles that we decided to begin offering them to WicksWorks.com customers. Currently three styles of these candles are available: 1 - 13 years; 1 - 18 years (personalized); and 1- 21 years.

Color coordinate your nuptials.

If you are in the throes of planning a wedding you will be pleased to learn that we recently increased our selection of wedding unity candles. Now we have 13 hand carved wedding unity candles from which to choose, making it easy to find the perfect set of wedding unity candles for your nuptials.

Of the six new wedding unity candles in our collection, four are available in 17 different colors. This feature makes it possible to coordinate the wedding unity candles with the overall color theme of the wedding. Whereas all the new additions are very lovely indeed, my personal favorites among them are the Stargazer Lilies and the Braided Heart, whose designs are unique, understated and elegant.

In case you are only vaguely familiar with weddings that include wedding unity candles, they involve the bride and groom using separate taper candles to light a decorative pillar candle in unison. The candle lighting ceremony symbolizes the joining of both families, the merging of two individuals, and the creation of a blended family. In some ceremonies the bride and groom blow out their individual candles, showing their intent to sublimate their individual needs to the greater needs of their union. In others, they leave them burning, symbolizing that they have not lost their individuality in the union.

Taking the path of least resistance pays off.

For anyone interested in our home based candle business opportunity who is unfamiliar with the term natural markets, let me briefly explain what it means and give you some insight into its importance to your success. Basically your natural market is every person, every group, every business, and every organization that you have a personal relationship with. The significance of this from a business perspective is that whenever you have a personal relationship with someone you have a potential warm introduction into that person’s sphere of influence.

Perhaps without even realizing it, everyone utilizes natural markets as situations arise. For instance, if you need help with something in your job or personal life, the first thing you do is mentally review the people in your life for likely prospects before exploring other options. And when you have some really important news that you’re dying to share, your brain automatically starts thinking about whom to call, visit, or e-mail.

With this in mind, it shouldn’t be difficult to see how tapping into your natural market is an obvious first step when you need help starting your new business or simply want to share your excitement about your new venture. I’m not suggesting that you put the hard sell on everybody you know, but I do think at the very least, in order to prime the word-of-mouth pump, you should systematically make absolutely every person you know aware of your new business.

When I first started my own home based candle business I was working at a company with about 150 employees. Since a majority of them were women, the primary consumers of candles, I decided to try a low impact marketing campaign with that pool of potential customers available to me. I brought scented candles into my office and set them on my desk with their tops removed, allowing the fragrance to permeate the room. As women came through my office, which was a fairly high traffic zone, many of them inquired about the candles and ultimately purchased some. And enough of them raved to coworkers about the candles they bought that I soon developed a steady clientele.

Clearly that was a unique situation, but there are countless other unique situations in which you can exploit a natural market without overstepping social proprieties. A perfect example of this involves my husband-wife team members Roy and Heather. They decided to take a case of scented candles with them when they went camping, and during the normal socializing that occurs among fellow campers they sold the entire case and took orders for several more. Many new distributors with a history of being active in their community find that the organizations they are involved with already often are very receptive to the idea of a candle fund-raiser because of their prior relationship with them.

The possibilities are limited only by your imagination and the scope of your social network. Utilizing your natural market comes under the category of working smarter not harder. When you have an advantage at your disposal to make your business successful, does it make sense not to use it? Not on your life! Take the path of least resistance. You’ll be glad that you did.

A simple and functional tool.

Several years ago we began stocking a product called the Candle Quencher, a multipurpose candle accessory that is a variation on a candle snuffer but with a few additional functions. It wasn’t until relatively recently that I got around to putting a candle quencher into service in my own home. Now that I have, I am a huge fan.

Candle quenchers are about 11 inches long and look like a cross between tweezers and fireplace tongs. As you might expect with a name like that, they do a great job of extinguishing burning candle wicks. Their mode of action is similar to dousing a flame by squeezing the wick between your fingers, but without the pain.

Because the candle quencher cuts off the flow of oxygen immediately, the smoky after burn you get when blowing out a candle flame or smothering it with a snuffer is prevented. By itself, that is a perfectly good reason to use this clever tool, but it gets better. While you’re quenching the wick the squeezing also trims it.

I am pretty satisfied with those features, but the longer I’ve had my candle quencher the more uses I’ve found for it. For instance, it works really well for scraping wax off the insides of jar candles. The heft of the tool makes it easy to coax the warmed wax off while the candle is burning.

Sometimes the wick drifts off center mid-burn, and when that occurs I find it fairly simple to reposition it with the candle quencher. Occasionally I use my candle quencher to flick off the blooms that develop on some wicks.

When container candles have reached the point where they’re either too much hassle to light or unsafe to burn, I relegate them to a candle warmer until all the fragrance is gone. A candle warmer turns the wax at the bottom of a mostly used container candle to liquid in a relatively short time. When the wax liquefies like that, I grab hold of the no-longer needed wick with the candle quencher and pull that sucker right out.

Doubtless I’ll find some other uses for my trusty candle quencher as time goes on, but for now I’m quite pleased with its versatility. I highly recommend this candle accessory for anyone who burns candles regularly. It makes a great gift for candle lovers.

Everybody loves a bargain.

Soy candles have long been one of our favorites for personal use. If you’ve never used soy candles, we highly recommend that you give them a try. They burn efficiently and virtually soot free, produce an excellent scent throw, and, as a bonus, are eco-friendly. What’s not to like!

Recently we decided to make a concerted effort to introduce more of our customers to their virtues. During an intense brainstorming session we concluded that appealing to people’s love of bargains would probably be the best way to accomplish that goal. So we created a Discount Soy Candles page that features a never-ending sale on a wide variety of soy candles.

With the exception of select products that are not practical to include, all our soy candles are now offered at steep discounts. We even added some new styles of soy candles to give bargain hunters more choices. Passing along the significant savings on the cost of shipping candles in quantities of four or more is central to this ongoing promotion. When they purchase four soy candles from us at the regular retail price, our customers will receive a fifth soy candle and its freight cost for free, a savings of 20-25% per candle.

Admit it, Bunky, this sounds too good to pass up. You owe it to yourself to at least visit Discount Soy Candles and look around. Enjoy.

Let them burn candles instead of calories.

Are you fresh out of ideas for what to do for your next fundraiser? Already tried fattening cookie dough and sugary, tasteless chocolate with little success? Consider a fun and profitable fundraising program where all you have to do is sell your supporters something they buy already: scented candles.

Our scented candles are the ideal product for a fundraiser because they are a very popular consumable product that customers buy again and again. People can contribute to your fundraiser painlessly by buying a scented candle from your organization that they would have bought anyway. Because these highly scented, gourmet candles are available in nearly 100 different fragrances, it’s easy for folks to find one they like.

The best feature of these candles is that they are made from a blend of natural waxes that are non-toxic and virtually soot-free when they burn. This is totally win-win. Your organization can feel good about selling a healthful product that no one will have reservations about using.

The logistics of this fundraising program are incredibly simple. Your volunteers just circulate catalogs and take orders for a limited time, generally about two weeks. Then, using the money collected by your volunteers, you purchase the candles from us and we send them to you for distribution. Your group keeps the remaining proceeds, often as much as $12 per candle sold.

This fundraiser program can be used repeatedly with excellent results. Many organizations report better sales from subsequent candle fundraisers because their supporters have already experienced the high quality products. It’s not uncommon for supporters to call the organization to find out when they can get more of these wonderful scented candles! Contact us today to get started.

Profiling isn’t limited to the FBI.

Since one of my business ventures involves helping people start a home based candle business, it’s hardly surprising that I spend time thinking about the attributes needed to succeed in that endeavor. During my latest brain storming bout it finally dawned on me that being female is practically de rigueur for an aspiring candle entrepreneur. Like any generality, there are exceptions of course, but my experience has been that considerably more women than men have a natural affinity for building successful home based candle businesses.

This phenomenon likely derives, in part, from the demographics of candle consumers. Many industry-sponsored surveys have shown that as high as 95% of all candle purchases are made by women. Whereas I am a little skeptical about the complete accuracy of those stats, I don’t need to analyze my candle sales data to know that the overwhelming majority of my customers are female.

I have noticed that men almost always shop for candles by themselves, and they are usually looking for a gift for a woman in their lives when they do. In contrast, shopping for candles is often a shared experience for women. And a fun one at that! Friends, sisters, and mothers and daughters can easily while away half an hour sniffing different candle fragrances or inspecting and handling a variety of candles and accessories.

It would be naive to think that simply being a woman is enough to succeed as a home based candle business owner. Obviously a combination of characteristics is required. But having two X chromosomes in your DNA sure helps.

As a general rule it is best to choose vocations that interest you. Selling candles is no exception. If you enjoy what you’re doing your enthusiasm will be infectious and, ultimately, your business will grow.

It’s not a news flash that selling is primarily the domain of outgoing people. Being an introvert is a very big handicap when trying to build and maintain a following of loyal candle customers. Gregarious people whose lifestyle provides a natural market of friends, acquaintances and organizations inevitably fare best in both the startup and growth phases of a home based candle business.

But even the most vivacious, well-connected woman can falter in any enterprise if she doesn’t possess certain skills and traits. Perhaps the most important, as well as the most elusive, of which is business acumen: an innate ability to recognize and exploit opportunities and have a clear view of the big picture.

If you’re reading this post and thinking, “Hey, that’s me she is describing,” please, please, please contact me ASAP. I’ll make you a star, kid. Well, I’ll help you make yourself one anyway. Think about it, you could be the next “Candle Lady.”

An unexpected introduction to the potency of essential oils.

I never gave aromatherapy much thought before we opened our first candle store. In an effort to offer the broadest selection of candles possible, we began stocking a sampling of aromatherapy candles. When the first shipment arrived, we set up a display of five aromatherapy candles with a blend titled Invigorating immediately adjacent to my computer desk. Soon afterward I started experiencing sensations of restlessness and agitation whenever I spent time working on my computer. This went on for about a week until my husband, in response to my bewildered grousing, deduced that I was overdosing on essential oil vapors from the nearby aromatherapy candles.

He removed all but two of the offending candles from the display and placed specially cut pieces of clear plastic over the portion of exposed wax on the ones remaining. The improvement was practically instantaneous. I was back to normal. No more jitters. Whew!

Although this experience made us both believers in the power of essential oils and aromatherapy, neither my husband nor I were predisposed to immerse ourselves in the world of aromatherapy. We didn’t feel compelled to study the beneficial aspects of particular essential oils or complementary blends. However, we did begin dabbling a bit with aromatherapy candles.

Like a great many consumers, our interest in aromatherapy is limited to influencing moods or alertness, so we rely on the descriptiveness of candles’ names. Our favorite is a palm wax aromatherapy candle called Relaxing (its intended effect couldn’t be any plainer), pleasingly scented with a blend of lavandin, tangerine and orange essential oils. We find burning one of these candles helps us ease into the Zen of computing, or to unwind after a long day. On really stressful occasions, of course, we pull out the big guns and augment our trusty aromatherapy candle with a glass of pinot noir.

Sometimes decompressing is not what is required (when working on tedious projects, for instance) and that is when Relaxing’s cousin Energizing comes in handy. It never fails to amaze me that simply smelling a blend of peppermint, spearmint and tea tree oils can clear your mind and keep you focused. I highly recommend this gentle method of cognitive stimulation.

I have virtually no metaphysical leanings, but chakra energy pillars are a type of aromatherapy candle that I find intriguing. They are designed for use during highly focused meditation and contain unusual essential oils such as frankincense, spruce and Morrocan rose as well as common ones like lavender, bergamot and cassia, all of which purportedly facilitate pinpointing energy in specific areas of the body and psyche. Many of our customers swear by them, often purchasing a full set of seven, one for each chakra. Based upon the number of reorders, I can only assume that most chakra energy candle purchasers find them beneficial in some way.

Infantry unit gets unexpected holiday gift.

Last year a customer purchased a 6-month subscription to Candle of the Month Club. He was treating himself to an economical indulgence and one that would give him 2 candles of different scents each month. The order had a delivery address which looked a bit unusual. As always, the online USPS database was consulted in an attempt to verify the accuracy of the address. When the query returned a message indicating that the address may be undeliverable, contacting the customer was the next step. A call to his cell phone was answered on the second ring and the reception was amazingly clear. He assured me that the delivery address was correct and that he received mail there on a regular basis. The email address provided on the order seemed to indicate that he was a member of the military currently stationed in Iraq. When asked about this, he said that his tour of duty was for an entire year. This prompted me to inquire how many other individuals were in his company. I thanked him for his order and, more importantly, for his service to our country.

A few weeks later, on October 1st, a box containing 16 Hollyberry & Balsam votive candles and 4 Pumpkin Spice votives, each nestled in its own votive holder, was carefully packed and shipped. A brief note was included to our customer and instructed him to give one votive to each person in his company. Naturally, one of the votives was for him. It was our hope that lighting the votive would bring back fond memories of holidays past and bring a bit of comfort to an otherwise stressful tour of duty.
